The Long Table
New in a town where nobody eats together, Jonah keeps pulling out one more chair.
Start a story like thisAbout the story
Jonah moves to Calder Point for a job he isn't sure he wanted. The town is pretty and polite, and people nod at each other on the street and then eat dinner alone.
So Jonah does what he has always done. He cooks too much and knocks on doors. The first night it's him and the old man downstairs. The next week it's six people at a folding table in the square. By the end of the summer the tables run the length of the harbor, and Jonah has to figure out what to do when the thing he started is bigger than he is.
It's a story about making a home in a new place, one dinner at a time.
What Priya told us
This is all it took to start. We followed up with a few questions by email, then wrote the story.
"He's the friend who notices who's left out. Cooks for everyone. He just moved to a new city and he's a bit lonely, though he won't say it."
